Welcome to Starlight and Scout Design Co.

✨ Our Story

Once upon a time, in a tiny home garage filled with dye pots and daydreams, a brand was born. Formerly known as Ancient Queen Fiber, we have woven a new chapter and emerged as Starlight and Scout Design Co. — a small-batch, handmade fiber arts studio where we craft handmade art and fiber artist supplies.

Every piece of artwork is lovingly made.

Every notion is crafted with thoughtfulness and intent.

Every skein that leaves our studio is dyed by hand, in small batches, with intention and care.

We draw inspiration from art, music, and our love of whimsy and goth/alt culture. Our work is never mass-produced — it is made through slow processing and then sprinkled with a little bit of whimsy and enchantment.

Our brand is brought to life by two beloved mascots: Starlight and Scout. Starlight channels the spirit of witchiness and magical girl vibes, while Scout — a sleek and mysterious cat — was inspired by my very real, very magical feline companion.

🌿 Sustainability Practices

We believe that beautiful artwork, supplies, and yarn should also be kind to the world. That's why we are committed to sourcing responsibly:

All of our bases are ordered from mulesing-free suppliers, ensuring the welfare of the animals whose fibers we use.
Several of our bases incorporate recycled fibers, giving new life to materials that might otherwise go to waste.
Bits of our notions and packaging are made through repurposed materials.

We are always looking for ways to deepen our commitment to ethical and sustainable fiber arts. Small steps, made with care, add up to something meaningful.

Each of our yarn bases has been chosen for its unique qualities — the way it takes color, the way it feels in your hands, the way it transforms a pattern into something extraordinary. Here is a guide to the bases you'll find in our shop:

Snowdrift — 75% Superwash Merino, 25% Recycled Nylon | 437 yds / 100g
A sturdy, luminous base with a touch of eco-conscious nylon. Perfect for colorwork and everyday wear.
Marshmallow — 100% Superwash Merino | 437 yds / 100g
Soft as a cloud and a dream to knit or crochet. Colors bloom beautifully on this classic base.
Latte — 100% Baby Alpaca | 291 yds / 100g
Luxuriously soft with a gentle halo. Ideal for cozy accessories and next-to-skin projects.
Steam — 80% Fine Superwash Merino, 20% Baby Alpaca | 191 yds / 100g
A heavier, lofty blend that brings warmth and drape to every stitch.
Rodanthe — 100% Non-Superwash Shaniko Wool
A rustic, characterful base for those who love the natural spirit of wool. Best suited for felting or outerwear projects.

🧶 Dyed in Small Batches

My hand-dyed yarn/fiber is created in small batches at a time.
As a result, each skein or fiber will be similar but not identical.
It is all rinsed afterwards in hopes of ensuring that the dye will not bleed in the blocking or washing process; however, there is still always a possibility.
I do my best to photograph every item in proper lighting to show colors and effects. Please keep in mind that the item can vary slightly from the photograph due to lighting or how colors are shown on electronic devices.

🧶 Shipping/Returns

All ready to ship orders will be shipped within 3-5 days.

Anything that is dyed to order or commissioned will be completed and shipped in 3-5 weeks, if extra time is needed it will be stated.

📖 The Spellbook

Every dyer has their secrets — and ours are kept in The Spellbook.

The Spellbook is our living archive of dye formulas, a record of every past colorway we have ever conjured. Within its pages, you will find two sacred collections:

The Eternal — colorways that have stood the test of time and continue to be part of our regular offerings.
The Lost Arts — retired formulas, discontinued colorways, and rare dye experiments that have passed into legend. These may return one day... or they may not. Such is the nature of magic.
